The Festival of Pacific Arts and Culture (FestPAC) is the world's largest celebration and gathering of indigenous Pacific Islanders. The 13th iteration of FestPAC was held June 6th -16th 2024, marking the first time FestPAC has ever been hosted by Hawaii - with 28 different Pacific delegations participating. Capitol Modern, the Hawaii State Art Museum, was one of the main venues during FestPAC. A roundtable with Hawai'i Triennial 2025 (HT25) artists Las Nietas de Nonó (mulowayi iyaye nonó), Nanea Lum, Tiare Ribeaux, and Shannon Te Ao, moderated by curator Healoha Johnston (Bishop Museum). The artists discuss the layered meanings of aloha ʻāina, which can be translated into “love of land.” Aloha ‘āina can also refer to the care and fearless defense of land and ocean, a Hawai‘i-specific nationalism, an acknowledgement of the inter-connectivity in all living elements — whereby the boundaries of contemporary art be addressed.
